This Saturday, in honor of the 20th Anniversary of 9/11, the New London Dream Market has chosen the theme of Peace. This Saturday will provide all of us with an opportunity to participate in the act of turning guns into gardening tools! Goggles and gloves will be available to anyone who would like to participate in this demonstration. Finished gardening tools will be on display as well.
Our craftsman of the day, Jim Curry, retired Episcopal bishop of Connecticut, will set up his traveling furnace, anvil, hammer, gloves, and goggles. Bishop Curry is part of Swords to Plowshares Northeast which takes its name from Isaiah 2:4 “And they will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not raise up sword against nation; neither shall they learn war any more.”
Swords to Plowshares helps organize gun buybacks, education on safe storage of guns for people who decide to keep guns and gives the tools they make through blacksmithing and woodworking to community gardens, school gardening programs, youth anti-violence organizations and faith organizations.
