Juneteenth – Kickoff for FRESH New London’s CSA

June 19, 2025 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

FRESH is very proud to bring back our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.  Thank you to everyone who purchased shares in our locally grown food.  Our first CSA distribution is on Juneteenth and will continue every week for 19 weeks!

CSA’s origins in the Black community are rooted in the “pick-and-pay” system, where community members paid upfront for produce and harvested it themselves throughout the season. This model provided a stable market for Black farmers, who were often excluded from traditional agricultural support.

Booker T. Whatley (1915 – 2005) was an agriculture professor at Tuskegee University, Alabama, and a pioneer of sustainable agriculture in the post-World War II era.  Dr. Whatley is best known for his regenerative farming system, in combination with the direct marketing concept of pick-your-own (PYO), a customer harvesting operation managed by farmers and growers.
