SUMMARY:Film Screening - " Arc of Justice"
DESCRIPTION:The SECT Community Land Trust is partnering with New London Public Library to invite the public to a film screening of the “Arc of Justice”. \nArc of Justice traces the remarkable story of New Communities\, Inc. (NCI)\, an inspiration for hundreds of community land trusts that have been created across the USA and around the globe. NCI was created in 1969 by leaders of the Civil Rights Movement in southwest Georgia to help secure economic independence for African American families. For fifteen years\, NCI cooperatively farmed nearly 6000 acres of land in the face of attacks by local racists and refusals by federal agencies to provide grants or loans. Its land was lost to foreclosure in 1985\, but 25 years later NCI was given new life as a result of a successful class action lawsuit brought by hundreds of African American farmers against the U.S. Department of Agriculture. \nA panel discussion will immediately follow the film.

SUMMARY:Register for a Food Justice History Walk at Wesleyan University w/ FRESH New London!
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to A Food Justice History Walk w/ FRESH New London on Wednesday December 4\, 12-1pm\, which tells the people’s history of the United States’ food system from inception to present. It is not comprehensive\, but a living document (consistently updated) of some of the most prominent historic events that built up the food system (that is not broken\, but working perfectly the way it was designed) wherein those who pick the food are not the ones who benefit from eating the food–from Native Genocide & American Slavery all the way to Hurricane Maria. \nFRESH New London’s mission is to dismantle systemic oppression and work towards food equity through local agriculture\, community\, and youth organizing. FRESH focuses on urban agriculture\, youth leadership development\, and community engagement to create lasting local impacts. If you’d like to learn more about food justice or how you can contribute to FRESH New London’s cause\, we strongly encourage you to attend the event and share this information with others in your community who may be interested. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Lunch is included. Please register here. Feel free to contact Malana Rogers-Bursen (rrogersburse@wesleyan.edu) with any questions.
